IMS (intramuscular stimulation) is a treatment used for acute and chronic pain conditions, based on science in neurophysiological principles. IMS stimulates the healing process and helps the muscles relax.

What is IMS?

IMS (intramuscular stimulation) is a treatment used for acute and chronic pain conditions, based on science in neurophysiological principles. IMS involves the insertion of thin filiform needles to penetrate through the skin to the muscles that have shortened or contracted. Tight and shortened muscles are often at the root of long-term pain because they cannot heal properly. IMS stimulates the healing process and helps the muscles relax.

The technique is particularly effective for deep muscles that can be difficult or impossible to reach with other forms of soft-tissue treatments. It is often effective when other forms of therapy have failed.

How does it work?

The needle activates a reflex causing the muscle to twitch and release. This directly treats the cause of the pain by relaxing the shortened muscle, allowing it to return to its normal state.

Inserting the needle also creates a minor therapeutic injury to the area, stimulating and increase in local blood circulation and activate natural healing processes.

The effects of IMS are cumulative. Each session stimulates a certain amount of healing as the pain dissipates and the muscles loosen. It provides lasting relief and has few side effects.
